A Canadian company has requested a patent on a Space Elevator. Although the inital plan is 20km high, the patent says it could extent to 200km using gas cells. They would put a spaceport on top of the elevator making flights to space much more efficient and saving 30% in fuel.
This idea is a neat one, but realistically we are 50+ years from anything like this. Nice try Canada!
